Dive Belize

Belize’s reef is a paradise for divers and a must dive destination.

Belize has the second largest reef in the world and is home to an array of marine life. Over 150 miles of barrier reef form the edge of the coastal shelf, with Cayes strewn along and three of the four atolls of the Caribbean Sea.  The drop-offs from the atolls are spectacular and the variety of dive sites is seemingly endless. Immense canyons have been formed by large coral ridges rising upward from a downward sloping sandy bottom.  Filled with caves and tunnels, these canyons swarm with life, including snapper, grouper, nurse sharks and on occasion hammerhead and black-tip sharks. Barracuda, schools of spotted eagle rays, manta rays and schools of amberjack can also be found in the reef’s vicinity.

Visibility in the Caribbean ranges from 50 to 100 feet.

Water temperature is around 80F.

Come and experience Belize's amazing Barrier Reef and Atolls.

THE DIVES

THE GREAT BLUE HOLE at Lighthouse Reef Atoll

A world class dive made famous by Jack Cousteau and is now protected as a Natural monument and is technically a "karst-eroded sinkhole". The Blue Hole is 1000 feet in diameter and 408 feet deep which opens out into a complex network of caves and crevices, complete with stalactites and stalagmites. It was formed over a million years ago when Lighthouse Reef was a sizable island - or even part of the mainland. The Blue Hole is a  controlled dive with maximum bottom time 8 minutes at 130 feet. This is where the stalactites are. Often bull sharks are seen at this depth. We dive down the limestone wall to reach the stalagmites at 100 feet.  Looking upward from the deep are the rays of the sun penetrating through the hole. Often schools of yellow tail snapper pass by and sometimes bull sharks, creating a beautiful and dramatic effect. The rim of the Blue Hole is blanketed with various species of brightly colored corals and sponges which is ideal for snorkeling.  The dive to the Blue Hole is always accompanied by our most experience local Dive Master. One Dive Master to every 6 divers.

Half Moon Caye is the second dive of the day. We start the dive with a gently sloping sandy bottom dotted with patches of sea grass. Here commonly seen are stingrays, barracudas, hog snappers, jacks and yellow tail snappers. At 40 feet deep the sandy slopes joins a wall of pinnacles covered with a rich variety of coral life. We zigzag through the endless pinnacles until the end of the dive. The marine life and the coral formations in this area are simply amazing. The surface interval is spent on Half Moon Caye National Monument where we provide lunch and you can visit the only nesting area of the red footed booby birds in Belize and next to Galapagos Islands (Blue footed Booby Birds).

Long Caye is the third dive of the day called the  Aquarium. Large coral sponges and plentiful marine life. A relaxing dive at 50 feet deep. A great way to end a spectacular day of diving at Lighthouse Reef.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Amigos Wreck

Situated in the marine park area, depth of 50-100 feet, you will find an old sunken barge you can swim around.  The barge is 30 feet long.  The main attraction of the dive is the marine life. You will see plenty of nurse sharks, different species of groupers and stingrays. Here the marine life is not shy at all. You can come close up to a touching distance but please don’t touch. Surface interval is done at the Shark Ray Alley where you can swim, snorkel and relax. The second dive is done at the Hol-Chan Marine Park – a drift dive just outside of the park channel at a max. depth of 70 feet. The bottom formation is a series of 90 feet deep parallel canyons. Here you will find a variety of coral covering canyons. Eagle rays have often been spotted in the area. Also known as Eagle Ray Canyons.

Caye Caulker – Sponge Alley Dive (Drift Dive)

Located in front of Caye Caulker we dive on the outside of the barrier reef. The bottom structure formation is shallow canyons starting from 60 feet deep dropping in a gentle slope up to 120 feet. The canyons are covered with gorgonian fans gently weaving right and left with the surge action. Besides the natural tropical marine life occasionally larger species have been sighted here such as hammerheads, tuna and big groupers.  Both dives are done among the canyons in this area.  Surface interval is done in a shallow protected area inside the reef, usually Shark and Sting Ray City.
